Exhibition: October 20 - November 25, 2023

SARAHCROWN is pleased to announce the first solo exhibition by Brooklyn-based artist Dov Talpaz: The Sound of Longing. The exhibition will take place between October 20 and November 25, 2023 at SARAHCROWN New York’s Tribeca location, with an opening reception taking place on October 20, 6-8PM. The artist will be present. A catalog containing an essay by Jennifer Samet will be released during the artist talk scheduled for November 16, 6-8 PM

In The Sound of Longing, Talpaz proposes a brand new series of works that revolve around the feeling of longing. Longing intended as a testament to our capacity to feel deeply and to imagine beyond the present. In these new works, longing is never expressed literally. Rather, through an extraordinary combination of facial expressions, color combinations, vast empty areas, and scenes of people engaging in communal activities.

Talpaz draws his inspiration both from the wealth of expressionist and impressionist painters who have preceded him as well as from film and literature, having named Rosemarie Beck, film directors Kenji Mizoguchi and Yasujirō Ozo, and Paul Cézanne as primary influences. Through all of these combined influences, Talpaz has developed a visual language of simple composition, bold use of color and contrast, combined with a masterful technical execution, aimed towards producing stories and vignettes of longing. In her essay accompanying the catalog for this exhibition, Jennifer Samet writes:

“I see his paintings as entwined with a search for personal betterment: a humanist quest.  Over the past several years, Talpaz has focused on simplifying his compositions, using colored paper and latex collage as a tool in this process. It is not reductive; he is searching for essentials: deep meanings in complex stories, human connection and love… These simplifications and abstractions…  connect to the paintings of Henri Matisse from the 1910s, in which views beyond the window are suggested by simplified geometric angles of light – the spaces of desire and longing…  In his depictions of Mizoguchi’s films, the sense of longing comes from the enclosed rooms with glimpses of the world beyond.”

As you embark on this visual journey, allow yourself to be carried away by the art, let your senses resonate with the emotions conveyed, and find solace, inspiration, and a profound connection to the shared human longing for something just beyond our grasp."The Sound of Longing" is not just an exhibition of artworks; it is an exploration of the human spirit, an invitation to reflect upon the desires that shape our existence, and a testament to the enduring power of art to articulate the unspoken.

The exhibition will open to the public on October 20, from 6-8PM. For more information or to make an appointment please contact: info@sarahcrown.com |  www.sarahcrown.com.

About the Artist

Dov Talpaz is an artist based in Brooklyn, New York. At age 22, Talpaz moved to NYC to study painting at the New York Studio School with artists Mercedes Matter and Rosemarie Beck. In 2003, Talpaz started working at Paul Resika’s studio for seven years. Matter, Beck, and Resika were all important influences on Talpaz’s evolution as a painter. During that time, Talpaz has engaged in many painting collaborations with colleagues, co-creating the painting group “Painting in New York,” which exhibited biannually for twelve years.

In recent years, Talpaz has continued painting consistently in his Brooklyn studio while also spending time painting in nature, a focused experience that has led to new paths in his overall work. “Dov Talpaz’s works offer a delicate, profound view of the artist’s inner world through an artistically diverse range of technique and subject matter. His inspiration and centerpiece vary, from old Japanese movies to desert mountains, and the viewer can sense that they all speak of something more covert, more intricate. Talpaz’s geometric landscapes that border abstraction involve mountains as a visual pointer of his memories from Israel and American scenery. His figurative series, inspired by mostly film, literature, and significant life relationships, combine extreme opposition of vivid colors and expressive figures.” - Sarah Corona

Dov Talpaz has exhibited locally and internationally, including recent solo and group shows at 601 Artspace (NYC), Slag Gallery (NYC), EGMS Studio (Austria), SARAHCROWN (NYC), Triumph Gallery (Chicago), Loftis Studio (NYC), William Holman Gallery (NYC), Fire Barn Gallery (MI), and Muskegon Museum of Art (MI), among many others. His paintings were featured at the Untitled Art Fair (Miami), Dallas Art Fair (Texas), Art Prize (MI), and Spring/Break Art Fair (NYC). His works are part of private and public collections worldwide
