PUBLIC ART FESTIVAL: FROM DUSK TILL DAWN

Giorgio Casu, Martha Rosler, Anne Tardos, William Wegman and independent international film makers from Queens World Film Festival*

October 19 – 23, 2015

A curated program of art videos, films and a site-specific mural in Sunnyside, Queens. Curated with Rachel Gugelberger for No Longer Empty and Sunnyside Shines Business Improvement District.

In collaboration with Queens World Film Festival.

Founded in the 1800s as a rural hamlet, Sunnyside (a name derived from the early homestead that afforded breathtaking sunrise and sunset views) has grown into a vibrant neighborhood, rich in diversity and creativity, independent of Manhattan’s dominant economy. From Dusk Till Dawnfeatures art videos, short and narrative films, a site-specific mural, and cuisine in celebration of Sunnyside’s imaginative creative culture. Conceptually, From Dusk Till Dawn considers both time and light as impactful elements of the visual and oral storytelling process. Whether told over a candlelit dinner or around a campfire, articulated through film or site-responsive art, stories are livened by temporal circumstance and are shaped and illuminated by environment.

This year’s Sunnyside Restaurant Week opens Monday, October 19 at 6:30pm with screenings at Bliss Plaza, followed by a walk at 7pm to Giorgio Casu’s mural at SoleLuna for a talk by the artist. For five consecutive evenings, NLE presents dinnertime viewings of video, shorts, and narrative films that range in content from feminist video parody to Queens-centric narratives. The series will culminate in an evening of dark comedy and horror on Friday, October 23. The week-long celebration features three evenings of screenings organized in collaboration with Queens World Film Festival. Restaurants presenting video and film will serve a signature or theme-based cocktail based on the works on view.

Over the course of restaurant week Giorgio Casu will realize a site-specific mural on the building of SoleLuna Restaurant, located at 40-01 Queens Blvd, offering an immersive art experience that expands upon Sunnyside’s welcoming and community responsive neighborhood.
