Heekyoung Jeon (b. 1981, Seoul. Lives and works in Seoul, SK).

Jeon earned her BFA and MFA in Painting from Hongik University.

Jeon’s recent work has been profoundly shaped by her immersion in the natural environments of South Korea, particularly during artist residencies on Jeju Island and in Jeungdo, Shinan. These experiences deepened her engagement with the rhythms of nature and the sensory presence of water, which have become central to her practice. Water, depth, and immersion recur throughout Jeon’s work, connecting observed landscapes with more elusive, interior ones. For Jeon, the inaccessible depths of the sea offer a parallel to the inner self: a space that can be imagined and approached, but never fully reached. She describes landscapes of warm light filtering through openings, flowing water, and droplets suspended in time as scenes that might exist equally within the mind and somewhere beneath the sea. The luminous, water-filled places she paints may, as she suggests, reside “somewhere in the abyss within me,” functioning as both a source and a driving force for her work.
Through fluid brushwork, intricate details, and a palette often dominated by shades of blue, Jeon creates lively, immersive scenes in which waterfalls, oceans, light, and shifting atmospheres move between the tangible and the imagined. Rather than depicting nature as a fixed external subject, her paintings approach landscape as an emotional and intuitive terrain—one in which the depths of the natural world become inseparable from those of the interior self."

Her works have recently been acquired by HANA Bank (Seoul, KR) for their prestigious permanent collection. With 20 solo exhibitions since her debut in 2006 and over 150 group exhibitions worldwide, she has developed a robust and distinct language. In 2013, she was awarded the ‘Artist of Tomorrow Grand Prize’ by the Gyeomjae Jeongseon Art Museum. She has exhibited and participated in residencies at renowned institutions such as the Bundanon Art Museum in Australia, the Guandu Museum of Fine Art, and the Taitung Art Museum in Taiwan, as well as recently at Art Lab Sanyang in Korea. Numerous art institutions, public agencies, and private collectors have added her works to their collection, including the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art -Art and the Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art.
